Mask - Ligbi - Côte d’Ivoire - Celebration mask (No Reserve Price)
DJIMINI CELEBRATION MASK of the society Do
The Djimini Do Society, with roots in Ivory Coast, celebrates the hornbill through masks and sculptures. These art forms embody the mythical significance of the bird: linking it to ancestral spirits and fertility. Dance performances accompany key moments in the Islamic calendar and funerals of important people, influenced by Senufo culture. Their masks feature elements similar to birds, distinctive scarifications (in this piece, blue pigments are still present) , and elaborate hairstyles.
This very well-preserved piece retains a black patina with signs of use, blue pigments on the scarifications of the cheek and forehead, as well as white remains of kaolin on the eyes.
