Mask - Wood, Raffia - Chokwe Mukishi wa Pwo - Chokwe - Angola

With massive iron stand, painted black. Provenance: Mr. J. S. collected in 1980’s,, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Wooden mask with raffia. This mask is danced at the completion of the mukanda (initiation ceremonies) . It imparts fertility to the spectators. The mask has small eyes and open mouth, symbolizes the ideal mother and woman. This is a very fine example of the most widely available of all Chokwe masks. From Angola Height with raffia: 35 cm. Very good condition. Used and some sings of wear. Important information.
