Maternity figure - Wood - Phemba, Yombe - Congo DRC

Very interesting wooden figure from a mother and her child. There is also a symbolic snake on her head and a monkey is sitting on her shoulder. Large figure with a powerful appearance. Phemba, also known as Yombe maternity figures, refers to sculptural objects that depict the figures of a mother and child. Phemba are iconic examples of Kongo art and reflect the degree to which women are treasured in Kongo culture, not just for their fecundity, but as seers and guardians of the spirit. Kongo societies trace their descent through the female line of ancestors. Fair condition with traces of tribal use and a good patina of age. Contains some aging cracks. Provenance: former private collection from Belgium. Collected in the period 1953 - 1959 (More details provided to buyer) . Sold with a certificate of authenticity.
