Maya Carved Pottery Cylinder - Jaguar Face

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A carved terracotta cylinder vessel with a flared mouth and a decorative program of a single large, fierce jaguar face carved into one side. The face has a long, extended tongue surrounded by four canines, large eyes, a big snout, and ears studded with large earrings that would not have looked out of place on a member of the Mayan elite. The jaguar, renowned for its fierceness and hunting prowess, was a symbol of royalty. Size: 5.2" W x 4.6" H (13.2 cm x 11.7 cm)

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with restoration along repair lines and overpainting, mainly on the interior and exterior of the base. Nice preservation of motifs.
