Maya Polychrome Bowl Sgraffito Glyphs, ex-Schmitt

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built and stone-burnished pottery bowl bearing bands of red, white, and brown pigment across the exterior of the orange-hued ground. The white-painted band is decorated with abstract sgraffito steppe and curvilinear forms outlined with thin striations, with a red band above and a brown band below. Size: 8" Diameter x 3" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010

Condition Report: Minor abrasions and nicks commensurate with age, with light fading to pigment, some coarse deposits within basin, and a couple of spalls on interior and exterior, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to incised motifs on exterior.
