Maya Pottery Seated Monkey Whistle

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $350**

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A charming whistle in the form of a seated monkey wearing a large necklace with a hanging pectoral that lies in relief on his chest. The monkey has a prominent phallus. He also has large ears; his face is recessed, suggesting the dark fur/light fur contrast on the faces and heads of common Central American species like the Squirrel Monkey or possibly the Capuchin. An opening at the back with a loop of pottery forming a mouthpiece creates a whistling sound. Size: 3.05" W x 4.45" H (7.7 cm x 11.3 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
