Maya Ulua Valley Polychrome Bowl

Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful ceramic bowl created by Maya artisans in the Ulua Valley. The flat-based body flares outwards to create the shallow basin and rolled rim. A red-painted stripe encircles the interior just beneath the rim which itself is adorned with five red-and-black lines. The exterior shows a thin register of pyramids above a wide register of solid panels alternating with abstract stepped columns leading towards a central sun disk. Size: 7" W x 2.2" H (17.8 cm x 5.6 cm).

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple large pieces with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions to basin and exterior, with fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light encrustations within basin. Light earthen deposits and nice manganese deposits throughout.
