Medieval Italian Iron War Hammer Head

[ translate ]

**First Time At Auction**

Southern Europe, Italy, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. An iron hammer head with a square hammer face to one side and a long curved pick with ribs on the other end. A round socket opens through the center of the head with wings on both sides to reinforce the hammer head when mounted on a shaft. War hammers were designed for close-quarter combat around the 14th and 15th centurie. Due to the invention and prevalence of hardened steel armor, hammers were favored for the painful punch they could give, even if the opponents armor held up. This hammer head could certainly deal some severe blows! Size: 7.75" L x 1.185" W x 3.75" H (19.7 cm x 3 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
