Medieval Lead Pilgrims Ampulla.38mm high - (1)

[ translate ]

Medieval Lead Pilgrim Ampulla Decorated with the shell of Santiago Compostela on one side. The other side has some graffiti type cross hatched patterns, twin handles leading to an open neck. Ampullas were often decorated with the scallop shell. During the twelfth through fourteenth centuries, pilgrims were likely to purchase an ampulla, a type of container filled with holy water or oil. These could be purchased outside the shrines of a revered saint. The lure of the ampulla as an object capable of bestowing holy miracles gave it the same appeal as a relic. Thus, when pilgrims were not wearing their ampulla around their necks, they were using the contents within them to try to administer cures. Intact, both handles and in good condition for lead. Provenance; The seller of this lot hereby guarantees that this object was obtained legally. Purchased by the current owner in the UK, Ex K M Collection.
