Medieval Oak Bust of a Crowned Woman
Northern France, 14th century AD. A carved oak female bust (Madonna?) with draped veil and scooped neckline to her robe; the head in a drooping attitude and slightly turned, with doleful expression; crown worn over the veil with foliage ornament; remains of original gesso(?) foundation, white and red pigment; probably the upper part of a larger sculpture of the Saint Dié group. Cf. Forsyth, W.H., Mediaeval Statues of the Virgin in Lorraine Related in Type to the Saint-Die Virgin, Metropolitan Museum Studies, vol. 5, no. 2 (Sep. 1936), pp.235-258. 1.1 kg, 22cm (8 3/4").
