Josef Floch went to Paris in 1925 and lived there until his final emigration to New York in 1941. During this time he had intensive contact with Willy Eisenschitz and was very productive and successful. From this comes the "Mediterranean Landscape", which also exists in a larger version. The work is regarded as an example of a neo-objective conception with the melancholy typical of Floch, which runs through his entire oeuvre. The melancholic impression is intensified by an austere and reduced colour palette; ultimately, the sparse beach plants in the foreground loll about with an almost human ductus and provide a view of a wide - almost ideal - landscape, which is probably also emblematic of the artist's forward-looking view. We would like to express our sincere thanks to Karl Pallauf for his valuable advice in assessing the painting.
