Michael Rothenstein RA, British 1908-1993 – Fruit Bowl with Window, 1988; watercolour and gouache on paper, signed lower right ‘Michael Rothenstein’, 54.8 x 73.2 cm (ARR) (VAT charged on hammer price) Provenance: with Flowers East, London (according to the label on the reverse of the frame); private collection Note: the son of Sir William Rothenstein, the artist exhibited widely across the UK, having solo shows at the Redfern Gallery, Fry Art Gallery and Stoke-on-Trent City Museum and Gallery. A celebrated teacher and printmaker, he was also the illustrator for the UK first edition of John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’. His works are in the Tate, Jerwood and National Portrait Gallery collections. The artist lived in Great Bardfield, where he was part of an established arts community, that included John Aldridge, Edward Bawden and Kenneth Rowntree.
