Michoacan Pottery Standing Female Figure

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $200**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 100 BCE. A flat pottery figure of woman, nude aside from a necklace and earrings. Her head has a fascinating flat, elongated shape that juts backward from her face - which has bulging eyes and a huge nose - and which is raised and textured to give it the appearance of hair. This may represent skull shaping or beauty standards from the time period. Flat figures like this one are a signature artwork of the Michoacan people, although their purpose - aside from being placed in graves - is not known. Size: 1.95" W x 4.95" H (5 cm x 12.6 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
