Mid-20th C. African Igbo Wooden Chalk Spoon

Western Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large and lovely chalk spoon, hand-carved from a single piece of hard wood with finely-detailed features. A stylized female head serves as the decorative finial and displays almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, arching brows, a broad forehead, and a pair of incised bangs on either side of the head, all capped with a crested coiffure. The scoop portion is colored with a chalky-white pigment, hence the name "chalk spoon," with a scalloped rim around the obverse side. The verso displays a concentric circle design adorned with white, black, and yellow pigment. A thick, black-painted neck conjoins the scoop and finial, and a large parabolic metal suspension hook projects from the top. Size: 5.625" W x 15.75" H (14.3 cm x 40 cm).

Condition Report: Base of neck reattached to top of scoop. Age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, fading and light chipping to pigmentation, small losses to areas of face, neck, and scoop, and some light discoloration primarily in white areas. Light earthen deposits throughout.
