William Corson Holden was born in Nassau in the Bahamas in February 1893, the son of Mr. F. W. Holden, of the Imperial Lighthouse Service, and was educated at Nassau Grammar School. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 10 December 1913, and served with the Artillery during the Great War on the Western Front from 26 September 1914. He was promoted Lieutenant on 9 June 1915; Captain on 18 July 1917; and Acting Major on 7 August 1917. He was appointed Adjutant of the 27th Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery on 14 March 1916, and subsequently served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 23 August 1917, and with the British Salonika Force in Greek Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, and the islands of the Aegean Sea from 2 January 1918. For his services during the Great War he was Mentioned in Despatches ‘For gallant conduct and distinguished services rendered with the British Salonika Force during the period from the 1st March to the 1st October, 1918.’ (London Gazette 30 January 1919), and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross.
Following the cessation of hostilities Holden was appointed Staff Captain, Royal Artillery Fourth Garrison, on 18 June 1919, and Captain Instructor in Gunnery at the School of Artillery on 25 February 1922. He was promoted Brigade Major in 1926and was advanced Colonel on 1 January 1937. He served during the Second War with the British Expeditionary Force and with the Home Guard from 1940, being created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, before being appointed to the Eastern Supply Group Council, Delhi, India, in 1941, in which capacity he visited Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaya, Burma, Rhodesia, Kenya, Uganda, and the Dutch East Indies. He was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff, India, on 19 April 1943, and was promoted Major-General on 20 September 1944, upon taking up the appointment of Deputy Master-General of Ordnance, India. For his services during the Second World War in India he was created a Companion of the Order of the Star of India. He retired on 31 August 1946, and died at home in Beaulieu, Hampshire, on 15 March 1955.
