Mitchell's Dissected Map of the Eastern States

[ translate ]

Title/Content of Map: Mitchell's Dissected Map of the Eastern States
Cartographer: Young, J.H.
Date: 1854
Publisher: Cowperthwait, Desilver & Butler | Merriam, Moore & Co.
Size: 16.75Height - 10.8Width

Very rare reprint of the 1846 school atlas map engraved to illustrate Mitchell's School and Family Geography. With unchanged insets: No. 7 Map of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland; No. 9 Vicinity of Boston & Providence; and No. 10 Vicinity of New Haven & Hartford. Consists of a folding guide map and the same dissected as a jigsaw puzzle; both within a book-form octavo size box, brown embossed cloth lettered and decorated in gilt with a world globe on the front cover. Now conserved and placed within plexiglas and matting. 14 interlocking jigsaw border pieces with about forty conforming inner pieces. Apparently it was to be one of a series of six dissected map games; this is the only volume we have encountered. While we have a Colton puzzle map, it is wall map size in a large wooden case. This fits within a box that gives shelf appearance of a book. Unmentioned by Margaret K. Hofer in her 'The games we played in the golden age of board and table games' and apparently not in the Liman Collection, New York Historical Society. Exceptionally Rare Mitchell Dissected Map Game With "Book" Box
