3 vintages of Grand Cru Classé: 1981, 1982 and 1983 1982 Château Branaire-Ducru 4ème Grand Cru Classé Saint-Julien Top! Vintage score: 19/20 Stephen Tanzer: 95/100 Tasting notes: "A strong effort for this estate, the 1982 exhibits sweet aromas of plums, licorice, earth, and flowers. The tannins are slightly rustic, but the sweetness of the fruit, the broad expansive mouthfeel R. Parker (06/2009) About the domain: Château Branaire's vines, known as Branaire-Ducru, were once part of Château Beychevelle's vast vineyard. Classified as a fourth growth in 1855, it has belonged to a family-owned group headed by Patrick Maroteaux since 1988. The vineyard is located on one of the finest gravelly hilltops in the commune of Saint Julien-Beychevelle. The wine is very supple with an exceptional aromatic richness. Vinification has been carried out in a modern gravity-operated winery since 1991. Pumping of the harvested grapes and the wine is thereby avoided, and the grapes are kept whole and undamaged. About the cuvée: Branaire’s First wine is mainly composed of Cabernet-Sauvignon (about 70%) completed by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Rich, fragrant and deep, these wines represent the quintessence of Saint-Julien's style. This wine is elegant and straight with melting tannins. To be tasted after 10 to 25 years of maturing in a cellar. 1983 Château Calon Ségur Saint-Estèphe, 3ème Grand Cru Classé Great! Vintage score: 18/20 About the cuvée: In the recent vintages, the property has produced wines with superb depth in recent years that develop an exceptional aromatic palette with notes of undergrowth, graphite, black fruits and spices. Calon's team realized they could not compete in power with neighbour Montrose. Instead of concentrating the wine more, they made the right choice of elegance and delicacy. In parallel, there is more and more Cabernet Sauvignon, reducing the presence of Merlot, to bring more structure. Climate warming probably also explains this, even though a few years ago the Cabernet did not reach a sufficient level of maturity. The wine is aged for 100% in new barrels. Well-made for long-ageing, these wines are slow to evolve and open up; they offer exceptional value for money. 1981 Château Lascombes 2éme Grand Cru Classé Margaux Good Vintage Score: 15/20 About the domain: Château Lascombes owes its name to its first owner, Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes (born in 1625) . Lascombes' vineyard is one of the Médoc's largest, and consists of 40 plots scattered all over the appellation. The soil is made up of deep, fine gravel. Much appreciated on the Anglophone market, 40% of Château Lascombes' wines are sold in the United States, where they serve as ambassadors for French wine. About the cuvée: These are well-rounded, concentrated wines with a great deal of charm. Owned by the Colony Capital investment fund since 2001, the property was sold to the Health Insurance company MACSF in 2011.
