Mixtec Pottery Four-Legged Rattle Bowl

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A lovely hand-built pottery bowl with a shallow cavity, a collared rim, and four mammary-shaped feet, each containing a small rattle ball and a noise hole. Each component of the bowl is covered in an orange-red slip, characteristic of Mixtec pottery artistry, with no additional drawings or decorations on the surface. Vessels like this were perhaps used for presenting offerings at altars or temples, or may have had more utilitarian purposes like holding food or perhaps mixing certain materials. Size: 4.125" W x 9.25" H (10.5 cm x 23.5 cm).

Provenance: private Arcadia, California, USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago

Condition Report: Small loss to rim. Expected surface wear commensurate with age and use, with small chips and nicks to feet, rim, exterior, and interior surfaces. Light fading and discoloration to slip color, and some areas of roughness, otherwise very good. Nice encrustations and root marks throughout.
