Moche Brownware Portrait Vessel w/ Four Faces, TL'd

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A superb four-faced stirrup vessel built out of brownware pottery featuring stylized facial detailing on a slightly rounded base. Each face features a protruded nose, large ovoid eyes, slightly pronounced lips, and accented cheeks. Two differing expressions adorn the alternating faces - one serious with partially parted lips, the other full of excitement and rage with a wide mouth and bulging cheeks. The Moche were perhaps the only ancient culture in the Americas to produce portrait vessels. The sculptor's intent was to present a very realistic depiction, and interestingly, scholars have been able to follow the progression of age and rank of several of individuals portrayed in pottery. This is an extremely well-preserved example! Size: 6" W x 8" H (15.2 cm x 20.3 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#164933
Condition Report: Inventory label on bottom of base. TL test drill holes on base and in one of the noses. Otherwise in excellent condition and fully intact. Wonderfully preserved - very rare for a Phase example!
