[ translate ]

"Lives of the Literaty -- Account of the Life and Writings of John Erskine, Later One of the Ministers of Edinburgh", by Sir Henry Moncreiff-Wellwood, Bart. D.D., with an Appendix and Notes, Edinburgh 1818. Facsimile reprint with a new Introduction by Ned C. Landsman, SUNY [1997], published by Thoemmes Press, Bristol, England, 1997.

Rev. John Erskine DD (1721-1803), Scottish theologian, was born near Dunfermline at Carnock on 2 June 1721. His father was the great Scottish jurist John Erskine of Carnock and his grandfather was Colonel John Erskine of Cardross who had been in William of Orange's army when it invaded England in the Glorious Revolution of 1688.

John Erskine was well connected to the great religious events of the time - for example the religious revivals in Scotland, (see The 'Cambuslang Wark'), England (Methodism) and America (The Great Awakening). He obviously thought he was living in eventful times. He was well loved and respected and was asked to preach throughout the country. Sir Walter Scott praised Erskine in his novel "Guy Mannering"

Rev. Sir Henry Moncreiff-Wellwood 8th baronet of Tullibole (6 February 1750 - 9 August 1827) was a rare combination of both baronet in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia and minister of the Church of Scotland who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1785. He served as Chaplain to King George III in Scotland.
