Montana: the conductor and the indigenous leader
Walter DAMROSCH (conductor & composer, 1862-1950). - [Emil MIX (1881-1954, photographer)].
A vintage group photograph of Walter Damrosch & a native American man, possibly Lone Wolf, a ‘proof’. Montana: [no date but c. 1917?]. Photograph on thick paper stock (4 7/8 x 6 3/4 inches; 124 x 172 mm), a 'proof' with penciled notes to verso: together with the names of 4 individuals, 3 of whom ordered a copy of the image from the photographer. Condition: some fading to the left margin.
[with:]
The original photographic negative from which the photograph was printed.
[and:]
Two related vintage photographs (see images). Both by Mix.
A chance encounter between two figures of importance within their communities – the meeting probably tool place during one to Damrosch’s many American tours with New York Symphony Orchestra.
New York Times obit., December 20th 1954: “Emil Mix who played tuba with Sousa’s Band and later became well known as a manager of musicians and musical organizations, died Saturday afternoon of a heart attack while shopping on the closing day of Wannamaker’s department store.” He was also a gifted and enthusiastic photographer who seems to have made his ‘hobby’ pay for itself by producing RPPC which he sold to his colleagues: he was one of two semi-official photographers who recorded the off-duty life of the Sousa Band during their great world tour of 1911, for example. He was also a cinematographer – short ‘home movies’ of the Sousa Band are known. (4)
