Bernard Law MONTGOMERY, Field-Marshal 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein.

Small format broadside ’21 Army Group / Personal Message / from the C. in C. / 1. After four days of fighting the Allied Armies have secured a good and / firm lodgment area on the mainland of France. / … / 6. Good luck to you all. / [facsimile autograph inscription] ‘B.L. Monygomery / General / C.in.C 21 Army Group.’ / France, / 10 June, 1944’. [No place: June 1944?], 1p. wove paper (9 ¾ x 7 7/8 inches; 248 x 200mm). Condition: various pinholes – probably where the message was pinned to a notice board, old folds with occasional splits neatly repaired on the verso using archival acid free paper repair tape.

Rare original small broadside issue: the Allies had landed at the four Normandy locations on the 6thJune, and by the 10th had achieved some measure of success but the looked for outcome was at this stage by no means certain: Monty issued a series of morale-boosting ‘personal messages to 21 Army Group’ between 6 June 1944 and 8 May 1945. These were subsequently gathered together and reprinted. The present work appears to be from the much rarer original issue: there is a copy in Imperial War Museum (catalogue number LBY BAOR 711) but I have not been able to find another.
