Moucheron, Frederik de

MOUCHERON, Frederik de (follower of) Arcadian landscape with shepherdess. Late 17th c Drawing, brown and white wash over black chalk, 28,5 x 40 cm, laid paper, unsigned (bordered with 18th-c. watercolour framing lines, some foxing, sm. pricking holes at corners, tiny defect in sky at middle right). Under old passe-partout (torn at upper and lower section). A young lady resting near the ruins of a round ancient temple with a statue of Diana in its centre. The passe-partout contains an old auction label with attribution to Frederik de Moucheron (1633-1686), an Amsterdam Golden Age landscape painter. He set off at age 22 for Paris, where he spent three years and made a tour to Lyon, Italy and Greece. Although the winding Italian landscape and technique with brown wash show some affinity to Moucheron's compositions, the Arcadian theme seems to suggest a later production date. Prov. Collection R. P. Morris (not in Lugt). Joined: Monogrammist J.G. - Still life with fishes and seafood. Dutch school, 19th c. Drawing, pencil and black chalk, heightened with white, 46 x 60 cm, velin paper, signed with initials at lower right "JG" (burn mark at centre, several severe tears at upper and lower edges, frayed, creases, some brown stains, old repairs on verso). (2 pcs)
