Narayan Shridhar Bendre, an eminent Indian Modernist artist and educator,
hailed from Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Renowned for establishing the Baroda Group of Artists
in 1956 and founding the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1954, Bendre's artistic prowess centered on
diverse stylistic idioms within landscapes and portraits. Initially educated at Holkar College,
Agra University, and the Indore School of Art under DD Deolalikar, Bendre later received a
diploma from Sir JJ School of Art, Bombay, in 1934.His artistic journey underwent a
transformative phase after encountering Modernism during a stay in Santiniketan in 1945.
Influenced by luminaries like Nandalal Bose and inspired by Post-Impressionism and
Fauvism, Bendre further honed his craft through studies in the USA and a visit to China. In
1950, he assumed leadership of the Department of Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts,
Baroda, nurturing talents such as Jyoti Bhatt. Bendre's contribution to art earned him
accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. His demise in
1992 marked the end of a prolific artistic era.
