NIKOLAUS CHRISTOPHER MATTHES | STILL LIFES OF EXOTIC SHELLS ON A MARBLE LEDGE

[ translate ]

NIKOLAUS CHRISTOPHER MATTHES
Hamburg 1729 - 1796
STILL LIFES OF EXOTIC SHELLS ON A MARBLE LEDGE

oil on canvas, a pair
the first, 14⅝ by 18½ in.; 37.1 by 47 cm.
the second, 14⅜ by 18⅜ in.; 36.5 by 46.7 cm.
(2)

Condition Report:
Both canvases have modern relinings and are stable in their stretchers. On both, a detailed still life image reads strongly beneath clear varnish, and neither has visible losses or repairs. Under UV inspection, the first painting shows very few finely applied retouches around the edges of the larger shell and in the shadows on the table. Under UV, the second painting shows small strokes of retouching throughout the upper background and along the table edge and between shells, but no retouching is visible on the shells themselves. Overall, both paintings are in good condition and can hang in their present state. Offered in decoratively carved giltwood frames.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
