The English artist, James Hayllar, travelled in Italy form 1851 to 1853. The present painting presumably adheres to this period, before he married in 1855 and went on to settle down in Oxfordshire on the estate “Castle Priory”. Here he kept his studio and furthermore taught his four daughters the art of painting.
Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 75, 1956 no. 65.
