Nayarit Pottery Female Figure

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hollow-built pottery figure of a woman adorned in cream and red-hued stripes and shown seated upon a 2-footed stool with her short legs stretched out before her. Her portly abdomen and perky breasts are perhaps indicative of pregnancy, with square shoulders tapering to stubbed arms. Her huge head boasts impressed coffee-bean-shaped eyes, an enormous aquiline nose with an accompanying nose ring, wing-form ears, and a gaping mouth, all beneath wide forehead that flares outward then curved inward to an annular opening. Size: 5" W x 8.5" H (12.7 cm x 21.6 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, before 2010
