Nayarit San Juanito Bi-Chrome Seated Female Figure

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Juanito style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hollow-built pottery figure of a woman seated upon a flat base and stocky legs. Her portly abdomen and perky breasts are perhaps indicative of pregnancy, with rounded shoulders tapering to attenuated arms adorned with a pair of arm bands, and a small vent slit on the verso. Her elongated head boasts impressed coffee-bean-shaped eyes, an enormous aquiline nose with accompanying nose ring, elaborate netted earrings, and a gaping mouth, all beneath a tall forehead wrapped with two pairs of intersecting straps. The highly-burnished figure is presented with a cream-hued slip, and red pigment accentuates the applied ornamentation. Size: 5.8" W x 7.75" H (14.7 cm x 19.7 cm).

Condition Report: Repair to right arm and top of forehead, and restoration to nose and areas of face, with light resurfacing along break lines. Losses to some fingers on both hands, with minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, and head, and fading to original pigmentation. Light earthen deposits throughout.
