Nazca Polychrome Bowl w/ Animated Faces

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A vibrantly decorated pottery bowl with a well-crafted rounded base accented by a dramatically flared neck and rim. The lower register is decorated with an animated band of repeating smiling faces, each with wide almond-shaped eyes, curved lips and swooping sideburns. The upper register displays rows of thick circles in bright shades of red, white and ochre all atop a deep brown pigment - making up what could perhaps be interpreted as a contiguous hair piece. Its basin is dramatically concaved, highly burnished and is painted in a rich orange hue. The vessel’s rounded base and smooth burnished surface allows it to be easily spun. A mesmerizing example! Size: 7.25" W x 3.5" H (18.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex George Grossblatt collection, former owner of Pinata Party, an importer of South American deisgn and fashion into the U.S., acquired in the 1960s and thence by descent to B. D., his widow, New York City, New York, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
