Near Miniature Corinthian Pottery Aryballos

Ancient Greece, Corinth, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A fine wheel-thrown pottery aryballos of a near-miniature form with a round but stable base, a spherical body, a squat neck, a discoid rim with an overhanging lip, and a tab handle joining rim to shoulder. The cream-hued exterior provides an elegant ground atop which the black-painted linear motifs are presented. The neck is encircled with a radiating band of tongues, the rim with concentric circles, the body with thick bands encircling a fretted band, and the base with a small flower. Size: 2.125" W x 2.1" H (5.4 cm x 5.3 cm).

Provenance: private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired from Goldberg Auctions, Los Angeles, California, USA in 1968
