*Netherlands East Indies: 1802 Silver Duit NGC MS 64
A remarkably well-preserved silver duit of the Batavian Republic, struck in 1802 during the brief transitional period following the decline of the Dutch East India Company. The obverse bears the inscription INDIAE BATAV: above the date, while the reverse features the crowned Dutch shield flanked by the denomination 5 and 1/16 (which refers to the calculation being that 5 Duits were legally equal to 1/16 of Gulden).
Beautifully struck for the issue, with crisp lettering throughout and strong definition to the crowned arms. Both sides retain original silver-grey surfaces accented by subtle golden and iridescent undertones, particularly evident around the legends and central devices. The fields display pleasing reflectivity beneath the toning, while only minor marks are present, entirely consistent with the lofty Mint State designation.
Silver duits of the Batavian administration are encountered far less frequently than their copper counterparts, with high-grade examples proving especially elusive. The present specimen stands out for its sharp strike, wholesome originality, and superior state of preservation.
