An impressive and historically important countermarked crown-sized issue of Madura, struck upon a Mexican 8 Reales of Charles IV. The host coin remains boldly detailed, with the portrait, legends, and date all clearly visible beneath an attractive overlay of old cabinet toning. The large Madura countermark is sharply impressed over the graffiti carved onto the coin. Close inspection of the graffiti suggests that the scribbling is most likely Javanese, thus making this countermarked coin especially unique.
The surfaces exhibit handsome silver-grey patina with iridescent blue, gold, and charcoal hues. The counterstamp itself is crisp and centred away from the portrait with the graffiti beautifully carved into the fields, while additional scratches on the portrait do not diminish the overall eye appeal of this substantial and visually impressive piece.
