Leeuwarden was one of the more important Frisian settlements of that time, and was, together with settlements like Dokkum, Bolsward and Stavoren, one of the minting towns. Leeuwarden was created on a number of mounds, and was an inlet of the Middelzee (Bordine) and the North Sea. It maintained trade contacts with other trading posts like Lübeck and the Baltic Sea States.
