Newspaper with Early Mention of Jewish Presence in London, 1767

[ translate ]

Copy of The Gentleman's Magazine from June, 1767. Written on page 329:

A Jew was carried before the Lord Mayor, charged with hawking hats for sale in this city, contrary to law, which ſubjets all hawkers who preſume so to do in any corporation to the penalty of 12 l. or to be committed for a certain time to hard labour in Bridewell. The fact being proved, security was given for the Jews appearance to answer the above charge before a Court of Judicature.

Later on in the article, another person, a non-Jew, was mentioned as having been accused of a similar crime. This event occurred just 13 years after Britain passed the Jewish Naturalisation Act in 1753.
