Nicoya Ceramic Figural Vessel - Human Bird Hybrid

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A classic example of the Nicoya ceramic form, a standing, teardrop-shaped vessel on a rounded base with a face that appears to by a hybrid of a human and a bird emerging from the neck and painted motifs of wing- and leg-like forms surround the body. The neck flares outward to an unpronounced rim with a pair of vertical loop handles emerging from its sides to meet the shoulder. Size: 4.95" W x 6.85" H (12.6 cm x 17.4 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Leonard collection, Virginia, USA, acquired before 1979
