Mixed media on paper, 39 x 27 cm. Signed and dated O. Mikiver 86.
PROVENANCE
The artist's family.
Olev Mikiver was born in 1922 in the small town of Loksa located about 60 kilometers east of Tallinn. Even as a child he was attracted to art and especially to painting and from an early age one could tell that Mikiver was artistically laid. His passion and interest developed and in 1942 he began studying graphics at the School of Art in Tallinn and subsequently continued his studies at the Art Academy Pallas in the university city of Tartu, Estonia.
When war broke out, he fled like many others and settled in Stockholm. Here he continued his artistic studies at the concretistically oriented Académie Libre in Stockholm from 1947 to 1948, before moving to Paris in 1951 to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He made his debut in 1946 with the exhibition “Estonian and Latvian Art” at Liljevalchs in Stockholm. This was followed by “Surrealist Manifestation 1949”, “Konst i lands1951” and Stockholmssalongen på Liljevalchs in 1958. In addition to that, Mikiver has participated in several group exhibitions and exhibited solo both in Sweden and abroad, but the exhibition he held most notably highest of them all was in 1991 at the Estonian Art Museum Kumu in Tallinn, when Estonia had regained its independence once again.
For nearly two decades, Mikiver worked in addition to painting, first as a decorator and then as a scenographer at Malmö Stadsteater (now Malmö Opera). Regardless of whether the work concerned theatrical sets or painting, Mikiver adhered to a surrealist style with cubist and expressionist features and over time developed a style of his own, with motifs drawn from Greek mythology, among other things. From the 1980s onwards he developed into a distinguished colourist and the works of the auction are great examples of this.Show more
