Offering box - Teak - Hsun ok - Burma - late nineteenth
DESCRIPTION Imposing “Hsun Ok” Lacquerware (70 cm!) in carved and lacquered Teak wood, it was used to bring offerings to monasteries during Buddhist ceremonies. The tip is in carved and turned wood. “Thayo” decoration, the band surrounding it is composed of paste made of a mixture of tree sap, ashes and powder of crushed animal bones, this paste was then placed in a mould, and then applied on the recipient before the lacquering. This technique has now disappeared, except for the restoration of damaged lacquerware. 70 cm high and 31 cm of diameter. Region of Bagan. Ancient and very decorative object. TRAVEL DIARY OF JEAN DUMOULIN During my first travel in Bagan, I fell in love with the lacquered Hsun Ok, these recipients in a pagoda form, mounted on a stand present a timeless and perfect design. The first pieces I purchased had a lot of trouble arriving in Antwerp, but after several months, the latter arrived intact, despite a quite rudimentary packaging. This item is among the last objects I could collect in Burma, they were first blocked because of the covid crisis, and then unfortunately, because of the coup that hit the country. I did not believe I would ever receive them. . . CONDITION: Average condition, local restorations, possible re-lacquering, small lacks (have a look at the pictures) , which are usual given its age and use. The lacquer is stable and solid. Careful packaging, insured shipment with track & trace.
