Okimono - Elephant ivory - 'Koshin' or 'Mitsunao' 光直 - A fine carving of the rakan Handaka Sonja - - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)
Okimono - Elephant ivory - 'Koshin' or 'Mitsunao' 光直 - A fine carving of the rakan Handaka Sonja - - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912) Originally identified as the rakan Handaka Sonja, this is possibly Daruma crossing the Yangtze river. The okimono carved out of a single piece of ivory with very fine details (for example the face, hands and feet) . The eyes are inlaid (horn?) and his necklace with a single pink stone. Handaka holding a fly whisk in his left hand and praying beads in his other hand. Condition: some age cracks, several from the time of the carving (probably already dry ivory used) camouflaged with leaf design engraving. The backside more yellow because the front was more exposed to light. A report from an expert is added to confirm that the okimono can be legally sold in the EU. Insured shipping.
