Old Master Dutch Hermann Van Swanevelt Etchings

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $200**

Hermann Van Swanevelt (Dutch, 1603-1655), two etchings entitled "Sepultura in Viea Apia" and "Hosteria a Priema Porta," ca. 1630s to 1650s. A wonderful pair of framed Old Master etchings by Hermann Van Swanevelt, a famous painter and etcher, also known as Herman d'Italy or Il Erimita. His skills developed in collaboration with the acclaimed Claude Lorrain in Rome - both artists created beautiful idyllic landscapes. However, Van Swanevelt's etchings made it possible to share this new landscape style with the public at large and contributed greatly to the popularity of landscapes through the 17th and 18th centuries. These two compositions are among those that this early Italianate etcher created in Rome. Size: each measures ~ 7.125" W x 4.5" H (18.1 cm x 11.4 cm); 8.625" W x 5.875" H (21.9 cm x 14.9 cm) framed

According to the J. Paul Getty Museum, "Herman van Swanevelt spent his career outside his native Holland. In Paris he painted his first signed and dated works in 1623. In 1629 he moved to Rome, where he painted many landscapes with biblical and mythological subjects. His usual compositional structure, derived from Cornelis van Poelenburgh's work, proved very popular with the Romans, and the Barberini family and the Vatican offered him commissions. Along with Claude Lorrain and others, he also painted landscapes for Philip IV's new Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid.

In the 1630s Swanevelt's landscapes made him an important link between early Dutch Italianate painters such as van Poelenburgh and Bartholomeus Breenbergh and the second generation Italianates such as Nicolaes Berchem. In 1641 he returned to Paris, where he remained except for occasional visits to his birthplace. He became a member of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1651. He assisted in the decoration of the Hotel Lambert and made numerous drawings and etchings."

Provenance: private Los Angeles County, California, USA collection, acquired by descent from the owner's father, collection amassed between 1950-1990

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#135375
Condition Report: These etchings have not been examined outside the frames. They appear to show normal areas of foxing and "Priema Porta" has a slight tear to the lower left corner in the margin. Otherwise, both are very good and set in matching frames under glass.
