Olmec Pottery Bird Vessel

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec culture, ca. 1150 to 550 BCE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a petite form with a round but stable base, a bulbous body with ovoid wings, a tab-shaped tail with a few thin striations suggestive of feathers, and a wide neck. The head of the bird - which doubles as the neck and rim of the vessel - boasts circular eyes within elongated eye sockets, a protruding brow, and a narrow beak. Size: 2.375" W x 1.625" H (6 cm x 4.1 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
