Oscar Florianus Bluemner (American, 1867-1938) watercolor on paper titled "Bulk Head", in a gilt frame. From the Jeffrey M. Kaplan Art Collection, purchased from Pensler Gallery, Washington DC on 12/15/1999 for $9,500. Bluemner was born as Friedrich Julius Oskar Blümner in Prenzlau, Germany, on June 21, 1867. He studied painting and architecture at the Royal Academy of Design in Berlin. In 1908 Bluemner met Alfred Stieglitz, who introduced him to the artistic innovations of the Europeans and Americans. In addition to his photography, Stieglitz was known for the New York art galleries that he ran in the early part of the 20th century, where he introduced many avant-garde European artists to the U.S. He was married to painter Georgia O'Keeffe.
