Otto Dix - Madonna im Walde
Otto Dix
Madonna im Walde
1942
Pencil and charcoal drawing on pale brown drawing paper. 87 x 55.8 cm. Signed and dated '1942' lower right with the artist's signet. Numbered "10/12" verso. - With short, professionally backed tears around the margins; with some very minute, barely visible foxmarks.
The large-format drawing "Madonna im Walde" is the only known complete preparatory work for the painting "Madonna am Wasser" (Löffler 1942/1). In Ulrike Lorenz's catalogue raisonné drawings and pastels, only a preparatory drawing for the Christ Child is included (Ulrike Lorenz, Otto Dix. Das Werkverzeichnis der Zeichnungen und Pastelle, ed. by the Otto Dix Foundation Vaduz, vol. V, p. 1962, no. IE 6.34.4). This expansive pencil and charcoal drawing corresponds in most details with the executed painting.
