Overlaet, Anton

OVERLAET, Anton. After Peter Paul Rubens Portrait of a bearded man. Antwerp ca. 1770 Drawing, pen and brown ink, 33,5 x 24,5 cm, laid paper with watermark (fleur-de-lis), signed in pen at bottom "Inventé par P.P. Rubens. fait par A. Overlaet" (several tears at the edges with loss of paper, some stains). Overlaet (Antwerp 1720-1774) scrupulously copied numerous drawings after the Flemish and Dutch masters such as Rubens, Teniers and Rembrandt, creating the illusion that they were engravings. They were never intended as forgeries but rather highly appreciated for their skillful execution as conversation pieces. He combined his artistry with the profession of a baker and became a master engraver in 1761 at the Guild of St Luke. Only a handful of his works are known. Joined: Anonymous - Justitia. French school. Drawing, pen and black ink, grey and brown wash, 33,5 x 22 cm, laid paper with watermark (flower pot) (some stains and creases). Seated female figure on clouds with a scale and fasces in her hands. (2 pcs)
