The forest lake in the present painting is “Bondedammen” at Hellebæk - a lake that Skovgaard used as a starting point and motif for several of his late landscape paintings.
Skovgaard painted two versions of this motif; There is also a version from 1867 at the Skovgaard Museum (Inv. No. 10.143). In “P.C. Skovgaard - Dansk guldalder revurderet”, 2010, Peter Nørgaard Larsen writes about this painting (in Danish): “Few works by Skovgaard have the same clear reference to Claude Lorrain's pastoral landscapes and the Italianized Dutchman Jan Dirksz Both (ca. 1618–52), whose Arcadian landscape idylls Skovgaard probably knew from the Royal Danish Collection of Paintings or via etchings.” (p. 341).
