[ translate ]

PAIR OF EXCEPTIONAL RUSSIAN ICONS VASNETSOV C. 1890. Comprising two very finely painted icons of the same size and by the same hand depicting the Virgin and Child, and Christ as the Lord Almighty. The icon of the Virgin and Child repeats the fresco composition of the Mother of God located over the altar in the central apse in the Cathedral of Saint Vladimir, in Kiev, Ukraine, as painted by Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov (1848-1906). The icon of Christ would appear to be based on Vasnetsov's painting of Christ in the central dome of the same cathedral albeit a full-length depiction. Both icons exhibit the highest caliber of painting and are executed on incised gilt wood panels with Pan-Slavic or Art Nouveau decorative arches at top flanked by Seraphim and the halos heavily enameled. The verso of the Virgin and Child icon inscribed in Russian ÐœÐ°Ñ Ñ‚ÐµÑ€Ñ ÐºÐ°Ñ Ð’. Ðœ. Ð’Ð°Ñ Ð½ÐµÑ†Ð¾Ð²Ð°-1893 (Workshop of V.M. Vasnetsov 1893) and with old paper inventory label inscribed in Russian V. Vasnetsov #17, as well as other exhibition labels and collector's stamp.
