PASOLINI, Pier Paolo (Bologna, 5 marzo 1922 - Roma, 2 novembre 1975)
Caricature of Roberto Longhi by Pasolini
Profile caricature of Roberto Longhi, performed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, from a series. Charcoal pencil on paper, signed lower right PPP 71. In a review by Pier Paolo Pasolini, relating to Longhi's 1973 book "From Cimabue to Morandi" we read "If I think of the small classroom [...] where I attended Roberto Longhi's Bolognese courses, I seem to think of an island deserted, in the middle of a night without a light. And even Longhi who came, and spoke on that chair, and then went away, has the unreality of an apparition. It was, in fact, an apparition. I could not believe that, before and after speaking in that classroom, he had a private life, which guaranteed his normal continuity. In my immense shyness as a seventeen-year-old (who looked at least three years younger) I didn't dare even face such a problem. nothing about positions, careers, interests, transfers, teachings. What Longhi said was charismatic. [...] Only after Longhi did he become my true teacher. Then, in that Bolognese winter of war, he was simply the Revelation.
