A JADE ‘HORSE AND MONKEY’ GROUP, MA SHANG FENG HOU 马上封侯
China, Qing Dynasty
The horse is carved recumbent with its head turned backwards to face the monkey which is seated upon its back. The monkey is playfully carved with one hand holding the horse's reins and the other scratching its back. The piece is of white colour with dark inclusions.
H: 4,5 cm – L: 7,1 cm – w: 2,2 cm
Weight: 121 grams
Provenance: An important collection of jade carvings, mostly Ming libation cups, properties from a French private collector, assembled over 20 years, pieces either bought privately or at public auction.
Note: The depiction of a monkey upon a horse's back represents the rebus 'Ma shang feng hou' (马上封侯) which may be translated as 'May you receive a swift promotion to a high rank of office'. This popular motif was would have been used to confer good wishes to those hoping to advance quickly into officialdom.
