Painter unknown, 19th century
The Judgment of Paris. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 50×64 cm.
This painting depicts the classical myth of the Judgment of Paris, a pivotal moment in Greek mythology. In the background, a landscape of the Roman Campagna can be seen, where Paris has lived in hiding since his birth. Before him stand the three goddesses Hera (Power), Athena (Wisdom), and Aphrodite (Love), each claiming to be the most beautiful. The question had been posed by the goddess Eris, who, in revenge for not being invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, sought to sow discord among the goddesses. Paris, chosen by the gods as judge, points to Aphrodite as the fairest. His choice of the goddess of love not only secures victory for Aphrodite but also paves the way for Paris’ integration into the Trojan royal house and the later dramatic events of Trojan mythology.
Condition: Numerous crackles. In need of a light surface cleaning.
