Pair of Blue & White Horse Shoe Bowls, Qianlong
A Chinese pair of blue and white horse shoe porcelain bowls with a 6-character Qianlong mark and being of the period. Each is decorated with balls of flowers alternating with tracery and floral motifs above a lobed border. The pair were intended to be Doucai but the final enamel stage was never enacted so they are left unfinished.
Dimensions are: 2 1/2 inches tall X 5 3/4 inches wide. All measurements are approximate.
Condition: There is a crack in the rim, several small rim chips, and a chip to the bottom of 1. The other has several small pits and a firing crack in the exterior of the body.
Provenance: From the Slade family collection of Chinese ceramics and jade; assembled by three members of the family and by descent to the present owner. The collection was begun by Henry Adolphus Warre Slade (1869 - 1936), British businessman, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong (1908/09) and the Director of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation between 1900 and 1902. His brother, Marcus Warre Slade (1865–1941) was also barrister and King's Counsel in Hong Kong, another brother, Edmond Slade (1859–1928) was a Royal Navy Admiral in Hong Kong. The collection was added to by Henry Adolphus Warre Slade’s sons, Royal Navy Commander Gerald Gordon Slade (b. Hong Kong 1899 – d. Kent 1986), who fought in both World Wars, and his brother Maurice Gordon Slade (b. Hong Kong, 1902 – 1971). The Slade family hold peerage and are noted in Charles Mosley’s. Burke's Peerage.
