Pair of Jalisco Pottery Seated Female Sheepface Figures
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two hand-built terracotta female figures adorned by deep-red slip with white-painted details embellishing the surfaces. Each figure is seated with one leg folded beneath the other. The shorter figure has both arms resting beneath a slightly distended abdomen, perhaps suggestive of pregnancy, with globular breasts, rounded shoulders, and a thick neck. The taller figure holds one arm to her face while the other supports a small bowl. Each figure displays characteristic "sheepface" qualities such as coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pointed ears, thin mouths, projecting noses, and tall foreheads with intricate headbands. Both are classic examples from ancient Western Mexico! Size of largest (bowl): 6.375" H (16.2 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
#128734
Condition Report: Larger figure repaired from a few large pieces, with small losses and adhesive residue along break lines. Both figures have expected age-commensurate surface wear, fading and losses to pigmentation, and small chips to limbs and heads. Great earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
